Commuter Rail

The easiest way from Lisbon to Cascais or Sintra. Depending on the destination, also practical within the capital.

The commuter trains are perhaps the most important transportation artery for commuters, covering a semicircle of about 50 kilometers around the capital. The route along the Costa de Lisboa is beautiful, the costs are low, and at least during peak times, it doesn’t take longer than by car.

Guests from Sesimbra take the bus to ”Alcântara-Terra” for the yellow lines to Cascais or to ”Sete Rios” for the orange or blue marked train to Sintra. In the center of Lisbon, alternative stations are ”Rossio” for Sintra and ”Cais do Sodré” for Cascais. Rossio is often overcrowded by people not knowing how to get tickets. The journey takes at least 45 minutes, depending on boarding and intermediate stops, and in the worst case scenario, it can take over an hour. Visitors to Lisbon who fancy a trip south opt for the blue lines to Setúbal — you'll pass over the red bridge.

For single journeys, it depends on how many zones you cross; in the worst case, you’ll pay €3.75. The ”Tourist Travel Card” costs a flat rate of €6.40 for 24 hours. Alternatively, there’s the extended Navegante Ticket for €10.80, including metro and bus in Lisbon. With the Lisboa Card, you don’t have to think about fares. Because someone was asking: single and return tickets are not hop on hop off on any station on the way, therefore you need a daily pass.

The ticket system is diverse. Interesting for visitors to Sintra is the ”Train & Bus” offer: it includes buses 434 and 435, shuttling between the city center and the famous palaces — otherwise costing €12.50 each. Crowded anyway.

Within the city, the Lisbon Trains can be faster than the metro depending on the starting and ending points or to reach exciting neighborhoods outside like Marvila. The line towards Setúbal is an option on the way to Sesimbra: by train to ”Corroios,” then continue with bus 3545.
