Miradouro de Santa Catarina

CROWDED BUT GREAT

”Adamastor” is always a good spot for an early evening drink.

A wonderful viewpoint overlooking the Tagus River all the way to Cacilhas. It’s a large plaza where kids play football, hopefully without kicking it over the fence, and there’s usually someone playing music. The kiosk is great, but since the few tables are usually taken, you can bring your drinks from the nearby touristy supermarket and find a spot on the stones. It’s a popular place for locals to gather after work because it’s simply beautiful.

The plaza is named after a saint who, according to legend, preferred to be stigmatized rather than share a bed with a man. There’s also a statue that no one seems to care about, depicting Adamastor at the Cape of Good Hope, originally called the ”Cape of Storms”. Adamastor is a mythical symbol of the natural forces that the Portuguese encountered on their heroic sea voyages, conceived by the national poet Luís de Camões in homage to the heroes of Homer. In our opinion, the nearby Noobai Rooftop is highly overrated and doesn’t offer a better view.
