Santuário da Peninha
HIKING WITH A VIEW
Highest Point of the Serra de Sintra
For those who enjoy hiking, a tour around the Peninha Sanctuary could be appealing — even without a hike, the area with its stables, chapel, and small palace is worth a visit. The story dates back to the 16th century and tells of a shepherd who, thanks to the Virgin Mary, found bread for his entire village. The current appearance is the work of the builder of the Quinta da Regaleira, completed in 1918. It’s designed to look like a miniature version of the colorful palace in Sintra. Usually, you can only look from the outside, but the view from 450 meters high is excellent. Hold onto your hat! The short route includes some early history, while the long route overlaps somewhat with the Barragem hike.
