Bateria de Costa
LOST PLACE — VIEWPOINT
A lost place and great photo stop.
A deserted fortress in the hills of Arrábida, which is just a two-minute detour off the N379-1. Initially, there was a lighthouse here, and the expansion into a fortress occurred, like the Fort of Sesimbra, around 1640 in preparation for a potential war against Spain. It was specifically built to support the nearby Outão fortress, which is now reserved for patients of the orthopedic clinic and was constructed long before the Fort of São Filipe,
If anything, the area is known as the seventh battalion for the defense of the Lisbon harbor, stemming from a security report ordered by Prime Minister Salazar in England in anticipation of World War II. For some reason, the defense belt was completed in 1958. It’s also unclear why operations were maintained for 40 years. Since then, a few cannons have been left to rust, and the site has become covered in graffiti, offering great photo opportunities. As usual, there are discussions about various reuse concepts, ranging from an artillery museum to a luxury hotel.
