Chã dos Navegantes
Coastal hiking
A good hour-long circular route to a dilapidated fortress with an insanely beautiful view over the cliffs.
On the way to the cape, there’s a small parking lot in the dust, behind which are a few ruins that exemplify the country’s massive problems with migration from its former colonies. Simply follow the only recognizable dirt road, which splits towards the coast after about ten minutes. Go down to the right — you’ll be grateful for the sturdy pants you’re wearing within a few seconds.
Another 15 minutes later, you’ll find yourself amidst the ruins of the Baralha fortress, almost an outpost of the Fortaleza. There are debates about renovation, but it will never gain a majority. A bit further along the path, you’ll stumble upon the remains of a chapel, then head back up towards the parking lot. You can find the specific route on All Trails. It’s quite steep.
