LIFTING GOLD BARS — BEING BANKNOTES
An interactive museum about money. In a church. Kids love pressing all the buttons.
In 1930, the National Bank acquired an entire block next to the town hall. The property includes a baroque church that has been used as the Museum of Money for a few years. Crowds pass by, perhaps due to airport-like security checks. Presumably, this is necessary when entering a central bank.
Well-designed with much to discover, and it’s free. However, be sure to get a ticket to use the interactive features: you can lift a real gold bar and get your photo on a banknote (children must use their parents’ tickets for legal reasons). The coin collection from ancient times reflects the country’s wealth at various points in history, and you can admire an extremely rare gold Morabitino from the early Portuguese nation-state. You also learn a bit about the economy in general. Off-topic, but in the basement, there is a part of the medieval city wall to see. Perfect on a rainy day.
