Mercado de Algés
FOOD MARKET — FOOD COURT
The third market hall after Ribeira and Ourique to adopt a mixed concept.
Portugal, especially Lisbon and Porto, engage in endless discussions about the future of traditional market halls. For instance, in Benfica, traders vehemently oppose renovation and the associated additional costs. A major issue is also the integration of a traditional market with a food court. Well, initially, local gastronomy in the halls is nothing new (Saldanha is great), but examples like Time Out or Ourique also show that too many restaurants can diminish the importance of traditional operations. In Algés, this works relatively well because, firstly, there is a certain balance, and secondly, not 95% of the visitors are tourists. You can calmly buy your stuff or sit in the shops around the small hall among people from the neighborhood. A nice detour after a visit to Belém or on the way to/from Cascais.
