A Panificação Mecânica
BREAD WITH TRADITION
Remnants of the former ”State Bakery”.
One of Lisbon’s first large bakeries moves to new premises on the outskirts of Campo de Ourique in 1942. The building is influenced by Art Nouveau and features tiles with designs by Bordalo Pinheiro, who is considered the first comic artist in Portugal. Pinheiro is also the creator of all the often kitschy-looking vegetable ceramics resembling lettuces and the like. Today, the building may be in need of some renovation, but if you’re in the area, you might stop by for a sweet treat or lunch.
