Mercado 31 de Janeiro

FOOD SHOPPING — REAL FOOD

Just a regular market with ordinary dining options.

A classic among Lisbon’s market halls. Today, hidden behind a shopping center and the headquarters of a telecommunications provider, originally a bunch of open stalls next to the slaughterhouse. A go-to spot for Lisbon restaurateurs in search of fresh fish: Peixaria Veloso sells to top chefs and has been widely known since the accidental death of the owner in 2018. In addition, the usual offerings of a Portuguese market hall as well as a good vendor for Indian spices and teas.

Noteworthy are three restaurants in the hall. At the upper end, ”HM Caneira Negrais” offers excellent suckling pig, down at ”Cantina” one can get very honest Portuguese food in similarly unspectacular surroundings. One floor up, you can enjoy fish from the hall at ”Casa do Peixe”.
